A major project is well underway

Menzshed Kapiti have volunteered to help restore authentic World War II Marines Huts.

The project was initiated by The Kapiti US Marines Trust whose aim is to collect, preserve and promote World War II US Armed Forces history from 1942-1944 in the Kapiti district. Their focus is the history surrounding Camps Russell, MacKay and Paekakariki

The Huts will be the venue for a small history centre connected to the southern end of the Yankee Trail in the Paekakariki Holiday Park (the former site of Camp Paekakariki). The trail starts at the U.S.Marines Memorial in Queen Elizabeth Park.

A house comprising several huts is to be dismantled by the MenzShed Kapiti, relocated at their shed site, individual huts at to be refurbished to their original style and then delivered to the camp site.

The house was vacated early March and the photos show progress throughout the demolition process cumulating with an almost empty site.

More benefactors for MenzShed was the result of the upgrade to Life Pharmacy Paraparaumu and the closure of Blockbusters Waikanae. This resulted in generous donation by their owners of the internal stands and shelving. Because of lack of storage we had to be reasonably selective and may use some items for projects or we may sell them to benefit our funds.
